Yoichi better than Talisker?

That strange whirring noise you can hear is old Scots stillmen spinning in their graves. A Japanese whisky has been named Malt Whisky of the Year by Whisky magazine. Yoichi 20 year old from Hokkaido succeeded last year’s winner Talisker 18 year old to become the first ever overseas winner. It’s £150 a bottle so I don’t anticipate sampling it anytime soon, but it apparently tastes of smoke and blackcurrant.

Just to pile on the agony Suntory Hibiki won the best blended category. Excuse me while I go and cry into my Caol Ila.

P.S. I would have included a link to Whisky Magazine, but any site in this day and age that tells you that you have to use a particular browser to view it doesn’t deserve one. As a web designer I won’t be visiting it again.

It is a shame the Scotch didn’t do it this year, but Yoichi’s whiskies are good. I must admit that ALL of Nikka’s are good. It is Suntory’s which regularly disappoint me, they tend to lack richness and the finish tends to be shorter than Nikka’s - or Scotch’s for that matter.
Well said about the browser, though I use Firefox and have had no problems. Have the impression that Whisky Mag is losing readers hand over fist, I have been waiting a year for payment for an article.

I just tried the whisky mag site and you’re not missing anything by it crashing. As an aside I am now looking to track down more info on this Yoichi Whisky. I’ve been out emailing for comments on it so I can develop a post about this whisky - with some tasting notes.

Hi John, I’ve really only ever tried Suntory so maybe that explains why I haven’t been impressed. If I get a chance of trying a Nikka I’ll certainly do so.

Whisky Mag seem to have dropped the pop-up “Use IE” message now - instead they have a video player that takes forever to load!
