Glenmorangie Port Wood Finish

I’m gonna start this week with my thoughts on the Glenmorangie Port Wood Whisky.

This whisky has been matured in two distinct phases :

  1. Whisky is matured at first in Oak Casks from America
  2. The matured whisky is then finished in Port Wood ‘Pipes’

The first phase gives the whisky the traditional Glenmorangie flavourings - taking ten years in the cask. The second phase in the port wood ‘pipes’ takes around two years.

Whisky Colour

This little Port Wood finished number is golden - almost the same colour as dilute Irn-Bru.

Whisky Smell

The first smell you get is sweet, sugarry almost like a butter scotch sweeties. This is closely followed by the spiced section of the smell that reminds me of slightly damp fields after harvest. As I first had this whisky in a friends back garden not long after the lawn had been mown and the cut grass was still lying around in a pile maybe thats why I’m thinking of this smell so closely.

Whisky Taste

Slightly salty flavour with gentle sweet flavours combine to make this a fun tipple.

    Hi Karen,
I’ve just spent a wee while online trying to locate the original Glenmorangie Portwood cask - it has now been replaced by the Glenmorangie Qunita Ruban which is a different beast altogether.
You can get the Glenmorangie @ http://www.whiskyshop.com/Shop/Detail.aspx?pid=2191 its just a shade under £34. Hope that helps.
